stretcher verso retaining label typed, "Thomas Sully Portrait given/ to Tania Bailey, 5/10/77, her 50th birthday, by her parents; currently on loan to HRH and DSH," oil on canvas, framed.

21 x 17 inches (sight), 26 x 22 inches (frame).

Condition
lined, the lining has a rectangular cut -out near lower center revealing section of original canvas and the inscription,"TS" and "1867." Area of paint loss with small tear/ puncture to upper central ground above sitter. Minor scattered areas of retouch to background. To the left of sitter -a horizontal line of small "dots' of inpainting to ground continues into sitter's hair . Very minute paint loss in same location. The ground retains several brush hairs under paint. The frame engraved "Yates" on verso.

Provenance:Thence by descent in the family to the present consignor. Note:Elizabeth Neagle was the daughter of painter John Neagle (1796-1865), who was mentored by Thomas Sully (1783-1872). This portrait is recorded as, "Portrait painted for her brother, Garrett C. Neagle. Portrait begun April 12th, 1867, finished April 20th, 1867...," in Edward Biddle and Mantle Fielding, The Life and Works of Thomas Sully (1783-1872) (Philadelphia, 1921), no. 1306, pg. 238.
